Course Summary

This qualification is designed for those starting out either working or volunteering in teaching assistant roles, who wish to consolidate their knowledge and skills, and gain a recognised qualification.


  • Level 3 Diploma in Specialist Support in Teaching and Learning in Schools
  • Employment as Teaching Assistant and Learning Support Assistant

Entry requirements

In order to be eligible for the qualification you will need the following:

  • have at least level 2 in Literacy
  • have agreement from your employer to allow an assessor to visit you in the workplace
  • have a minimum of 3 months’ prior experience in a teaching assistant role
  • be working a minimum of 15 hours a week.


You will complete the following mandatory units:

  • Child and young person development
  • Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults
  • Equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people
  • Help improve own team practice in schools
  • Maintain and support relationships with children and young people
  • Safeguarding the welfare of children and young people
  • Support children and young people’s health and safety
  • Support children and young people’s positive behaviour
  • Supporting learning activities

There are a number of optional units, examples of which include:

  • Schools as organisations
  • Contribute to supporting bilingual learners
  • Support children and young people at meal or snack times
  • Support children and young people with disabilities and special educational needs
  • Support children and young people’s play and leisure
  • Support children and young people’s travel outside the setting
  • Support extra-curricular activities

Timings and Assessments

  • 6 – 12 months to complete
  • Your assessor will work with you to cover the knowledge and skills covered in the qualification. As well as being able to complete tasks competently, you should know why you do them a certain way. Together you will gather evidence to demonstrate you meet the qualification standards. A variety of assessment methods will be used. These will usually contain a mixture of:
    • Observation
    • Work products
    • Professional discussions
    • Oral and/or written question & answers
    • Reflective accounts
    • Witness testimonies
